This past week the disrupted load (damaged truck trailer) that came into the warehouse where my husband works was grapes. Three flats (ten two pound bags per flat), were hauled home the first night. The second day my hubby’s best friend brought out another three flats, not realizing that my hubby had already got some, and he delivered ten flats to the local food pantry, that he couldn’t even give away.
So for the past few days we have had grapes everywhere. You open the fridge door and grapes fall out, you open the freezer door and grapes fall out. One hundred twenty pounds of grapes taking up every available space in my kitchen.
So I thought I would pawn some off on my family members…
I called my older sister and offered her some, as it turns out, someone from the trucking company had stopped by the plant where my brother-in-law works selling the grapes for five dollars per flat and her husband had picked up five flats and had already given some to our mom, younger sister and grandmother.
So I started making jelly… 36 pints of grape jelly later, and I still have grapes coming out of my ears…
To top it off, our cukes are finally getting ready, along with the two five gallon buckets that my father delivered, the two grocery bags that my younger brother-in-law delivered and the bags that my older sister brought up… So now, on top of the grapes, I have cukes covering every available surface in the kitchen…
So I started making pickles, 24 gallons (48 half gallon jars) of pickles later, I still have more cukes than I know what to do with, and I used all my garlic surplus making them…
Any one have any good recipes for grapes (red seedless) and/or cucumbers? I’m simply running out of ideas…

That is just amazing. Between the grapes and cucumbers you are a busy young lady. Well it will keep you out of trouble(GRIN)

I’m actually finding that I enjoy doing it too, which really surprises me, as I always hated getting stuck helping with the canning when I was growing up. I’m actually looking forward to tomatoes, corn, and apples this year.
How weird, my first attempt to leave you a comment here produced a nasty error type message that it appeared to be spamy. What would cause that?
Too bad I didn’t do a cut and paste before it zapped it,
Trying a 2nd time. I’m sorry I don’t have a recipe for either the grapes or the cuks. I’m curious, why couldn’t the food pantry take them? What caused the damage to the grapes/what type of damage was there I guess is my question. Will the pantry be able to accept your jelly made from the grapes?
I was thinking about my homeless folks under the bridge, thinking homeless would enjoy the grapes even if damaged …do you have a homeless agency there in your area? They might benefit from a donation of your overage. Also tried to leave the link to one of my blogs regarding homeless…the bridge folks I mentioned above; thought you might enjoy looking around the blog. I’ll just leave the url this time see if that makes a difference? Last time it was the html fora link.

Have fun with your canning.

Hmm… Not sure why the error message, maybe my spam filter is getting a little too picky lately, it seems to happen sometimes.
The food pantry did take them, I guess it did sound like they didn’t, but what I meant was that he had tried to give them away to other employees, and friends and family first, but no one would take them. Although the food pantry won’t take my jelly, as they don’t accept homemade items. They prefer non-perishables actually.
We live in a very small town in western PA (the whole county only has 45,000 people), homeless shelters are non-existent in our area. I can’t even say that I’ve ever seen a homeless person in the area, although I’m sure there are at least a few. One thing we do have a lot of is abused women shelters, though.
My wife makes a chicken with grapes that she got off of Rachel Ray’s website that is really tasty
