Photo by rengberAt the beginning of June, just after school left out for the summer, the kids and I took the hermit crab tank out to the porch to clean it out. We put the crabs in a cardboard box and set about cleaning the tank.
When we turned around, one of the crabs was gone…
We looked for that crab for hours in the flowers beds around the porch, and all through the yard, but never found it. My daughter was heart-broken, it was her favorite crab that had gone missing. For days, every time we were in the front yard we scanned for that little sucker, but figured he was gone for good. At one point hubby even got in the crawl space under the house and porch to look for it.
Last night I was on the phone with my dad when my son came screaming into the house. “I found Sparkle” he was yelling. “Sparkle what?” I asked very confused. “Sparkle the crab.” And he plopped that missing crab down on my desk, and it promptly tried to hide under my keyboard.
Really? cialis prescription What are the chances?
That crab had been outside for more than two months alone. How the heck did it survive? We mow the yard once a week, we have three dogs that roam the yard freely, and we live in the woods buy antibiotics without prescription with lots of wild animals and birds.
My son was mowing the lawn last night and he was up doing along the edge of the road, when he bent down to move a big rock and saw something moving just ahead of him. It was the crab, trying to escape the mower.
All I can say is that is one lucky crab, I don’t know how it managed to stay alive for more than two months in our front yard, and find it’s way to the road, nearly 200 feet from the porch…
It’s now back in the tank with it’s buddies like nothing ever happened to it.

Your daughter must have been thrilled! How exciting to find him, happy and healthy, 2 months later. I am glad that he turned up.

She was thrilled when she saw him. But he didn’t want to be played with, he pinched me when I tried to get him out for her.
lol and can you IMAGINE the stories he will have to tell all his crab buddies about the adventures hes had
I’m sure he will! When we first put him in the tank the other crabs attacked him, so we had to bath them all in stress coat, so they would all smell the same. But they seem to be getting along fine since the bath.
Thanks for stopping by my blog. I love this post. Having brought hermit crabs home from a visit to Cape Cod, I cannot believe it survived on its own. My sister and nephews couldn’t keep theirs alive for half that time.

We can’t believe the little guy survived either, but it has been a hot and humid summer!
Hermit crabs are relatively easy to keep if you follow two rules:
They need high humidity, so a covered glass aquarium is the best to keep them in.
And they need to stay warm, so we use an aquarium cover that has lights in it.
Those two are the reason most don’t live long, people tend to keep them in wire mesh cages, which are neither warm enough or moist enough.
Other than those two things, they’re pretty easy to take care of, they eat just about anything from fruits and veggies, to meat, to graham crackers and cheese curls. We supplement ours with the store bought hermit crab food too.
