This morning was one of my days for parent helping at online prescription medications my daughter’s kindergarten class, I do it at least once a month with different activities. Today I was a writing helper, which is something they’re doing now three times a week until the end of May, which means they now need not only the normal parent helpers for the special activities, they also need three or more parents in each week to be writing helpers.
I’ve decided that I’m either the best parent in the the world, or the stupidest. When the sign up sheets came home, instead of writing down which days I would prefer to help, I simply wrote that my schedule is flexible enough to allow me to help anytime, so that the teacher could just fill me in on the days where she didn’t get anyone else to sign up. Out of the twenty-two kids in the class, only 6 parents signed up to help. To me that’s ridiculous, as I know some of those mother’s whom didn’t sign up to help are stay at home moms with no kids at home.
I expected to get maybe once or twice a month, I was wrong – dead wrong! I got every Monday and Friday mornings until the end of may, with one exception, I get next Friday off. I was surprise that I had so many days, but not too upset, as it is for my daughter.
This morning as we were getting ready to leave, my dear old Gram called. She needed a ride to town to get her glasses fixed. I offered to just drop them off for her, but she was adamant that she needed to go herself. So I told her that if she was riding to town with me, then she was parent helping at the cialis tadalafil 5mg school with me too, because there’s no where in town I trust an 82 year old woman alone for 2 hours.
She wasn’t too happy about it, I could tell by her attitude when we picked her up. But she didn’t complain too much luckily, as my daughter was with us.
At the school I got her all signed in with her own official “parent helper” badge and she was thrilled. When the teacher introduced her to the kids as “Miss Dorothy” she was estatic.
We got her set up listening to kids count to 100 during the morning madness, while I did my usual practicing site words and phonics until it was time for class to start.
Today’s journal (which is what the writing helpers are for – to help kids write in their journals) was about their names, last night’s homework was to ask their parents where their names were from, so my daughter was writing about mommy getting her name out of a book. Luckily, I convinced her to leave out Daddy’s input on where her name came from because I didn’t think the teacher would enjoy seeing the word smutty in a kindergartener’s journal. After the writing for the journals, there is always a picture to go with each entry, they used the custom rubber stamps that one child’s father made up for each child for Valentine’s Day. I have to admit, it was a cute idea as they were all adorable stamps, I would have never thought of it, but then I don’t own a printing shop like that family. I like most parents handed out valentine’s pencils and candy – so unimaginative, but functional.
Back to Gram, didn’t mean to get off topic. After journal time, the teacher decided to skip computer time and instead have my Gram tell the kids about what school was like when she was their age. The teacher pulled me aside first and asked if it was okay for her to do that, which I knew it would great for Gram. So for the last half an hour we were there, my 82 yr old grandmother, told the kids stories about her one room school house, where everyone from kindergarten age through eighth graders were in one room. The kids were amazed, most of them have never heard anything about that time, and some of them I’m not sure believed her but they all sat in utter silence and listened. Then she let them ask questions.
It was so cute, I’m sure it will be a day my Gram will be talking about the rest of her life she had so much fun wit the kids!

Oh my gosh…that brings tears to my eyes! Old folks are so amazing and have so much to share with us. I wish my grandma had lived long enough to see her soon to be grand child.

That is so nice. It makes me miss working w/ kids.
What an awesome inter-generational experience for everyone. I am sure that your grandmother did have the time of her life and kids need to hear these life stories.

Meg – Sorry to hear about your grandmother! Old folks are wonderful, especially when paired with very young children!
Susan – Would love to be friends! Very cool blog – I think I’m leaning towards being the “cool” type mom, wanting to be friends! Now if only dad would take over the discipline… Yeah, that isn’t going to happen!
Yes, it was great for everyone, and the teacher has asked to have her come back, which she’s really looking forward too!
