The Freezer Lock

Last week, or maybe it was the week before, we bought a new chest freezer.  I vaguely remember the sales lady telling us it had a lock on it, I had already done my research online and knew what freezer I wanted, so I was barely listening to her.

I did give a brief thought to why someone would want a lock on their freezer.  The best I could come up with was to hide a body.  I didn’t give it much thought. Nor when we set up and got the freezer up and going and filled.

Then last night as I was finishing up supper, I needed to get into the freezer.  The dang thing was locked.  I didn’t even remember seeing a key for the thing when we unpacked it.  So I ended up calling my husband at work to see if he knew where the key was.

I put it on the key chain with the keys for the bike and the backhoe.   Was his answer.

Why on there?  I had to ask.  It just seemed like stupid place to keep the freezer key.

He simply couldn’t think of a better place for it.  A better place for the key to the freezer?  How about in a kitchen drawer?  My desk perhaps, since the freezer is in my office?  Even on the pantry wall where the key hooks are?

But instead he put it in the “hidden cup” with the keys to things rarely used, but in an unlocked garage.

If I had spent the time to search before calling him, I might have been a little upset, as I would probably still be looking.

During this conversation, I had totally gotten focused on why he put the key where he did, that I had totally forgotten to ask him why he locked the freezer in the first place. I got that answer when he got home.

Because it has one.    Man’s logic I guess, I don’t get it.  We don’t even lock our back door most of the time, our garage is never locked,  but we lock our freezer simply because it has a lock.

I’m glad you were able to locate the key. To address your earlier statement, one might one a lock on their freezer if they had lots of people over and they didn’t want anyone looking for food. I’ve been to parties where the refrigerator and freezer had chain locks on them.

In answer to why a freezer has a lock, I believe the answer is so that a child won’t crawl inside and suffocate. At least that was why the put them on in “the old days”. If a small child gets into a chest type freezer, there is a type of vapor lock so they might not be able to get it open again, and the freezer is air tight and it would not take long for the kid to die of oxygen depravation. You know how kids are when playing hide n seek, or just being kids. :)

I don’t think that you should be upset or even that concerned as to why he put the key where he did. He was able to point it out and you were able to get it quickly. Another good reason for locks is to keep kids from stealing all your ice creams.

@ Chrystal – Really? I’ve never been to a party where the fridge has been locked. But it’s an interesting thought, and I can see the reason for it!

@ Lilysgramma – True, I hadn’t thought of the kids trying to climb in it. Of course they wouldn’t fit in ours because it’s always nearly full – they’d have to unload it first! But I do remember getting stuck in a tool chest once when I was little, during hide and seek.

@ Anthony – Well, not too horrible… More like stupid! Thanks!

Very true – but I needed something to write about that day! ;) But as for locking that freezer to keep the kids out of it, there’s nothing in it they would want, all the frozen snacks and ice cream are in the freezer on the refrigerator.
