A Post Revisted

Friday was my son’s fourteenth birthday, but unfortunately it also marked the one year anniversary of my paternal grandfather’s death, a sad beginning to last summer.

Yesterday, my blog reminded me (yes, I love the time machine plugin for wordpress, and that it brings up a list of posts from one year ago) about the festivities going on last year at this time.  And anytime my whole family, especially my dad’s side, gets together, there’s bound to be something to post about!

This was the topic of conversation last year at my son’s birthday/after the funeral home dinner, once the kids went off to play:

Grandma’s Vibrator

Sitting around after eating, after being at the funeral home all day, and everyone is remembering things grandpa and grandma had said and done over the years.

In the almost ten years since grandma died, grandpa had been finding things that had been hers and handing them out to whomever he felt needed them, or whoever he felt like giving them too. He had given me an antique sewing machine years ago, because it was one that grandma had lent me when she was teaching me to sew. Anyways, we were all talking about all that kind of stuff, when my dad cracks up laughing.

He starts telling us about how grandpa showed up one day a few years back with something of grandma’s for him and mom. It was her vibrator! Grandpa thought mom and dad might get some use out of it, he said.

Of course then he had to go dig it out. An antique vibrator… What a sight! The thing was HUGE! Short but huge! Then the jokes start flying… Out of the seven kids why did he choose dad instead of one of the other brothers, or their only daughter…

In other words what is proper etiquette cialis discounts in passing on family heirlooms like that? Of course dad thought (teasingly) that the oldest child should inherit it (most likely because he was there while we were discussing it, and was keeping very quiet throughout). Next it was thought that maybe Aunt N should have it as she was the only daughter. Then they thought that maybe Uncle J pills without prescription should have it because everyone knew that he and one of his past girlfriends had fond memories of it. How everyone knew that, I’m not sure because Uncle J wasn’t there at the time, but he was always the wild child. My thoughts were that grandpa had choosen dad because all the other women in the family were always smiling, except of course my mom, so he thought they needed it the most. This of course got a good laugh out of everyone, surprisingly enough even my mother!

No probably not an appropriate topic of conversation for any type of party, and probably not for this blog either.  But you have to admit, it is kind of funny!

My family is always like that, I can remember having a similar conversation with my (maternal) Gram not long after grandpa (her husband) died, where she informed us that if we had married real men, like grandpa had been, then we wouldn’t need vibrators, and then informed us that our generation is getting lazy, and not only in the bedroom, as back in “her day”, women didn’t get fat or need any other fat burner supplement because their men kept them active in the bedroom.  None of us ever thought of my grandfather in quite the same way again…  But it must have been true, because in the years following his death, she did start to put on the weight.  Maybe she needs to find another “real man”…

Ahh, families, you gotta love them!

Thanks so much for stopping by my tea blog for the June comments challenge – I’m here to return the favor! I’m sorry that you lost your grandfather last year, but it sure made me think about what’s going to happen to my….errrrr….private possessions when I die. Good thing I’ll be dead or I’d probably morbidly embarrassed :( LOL That was a funny story though, definitely something to pass down!!

Ha ha! That’s brilliant – I really do dread the thought of an antique vibrator! You should get it valued though, that would be interesting to know, though I might handle it carefully…

Best wishes to you and your family!

I’ve thought about that – I wonder if there’s an Antiques Road Show coming to my area anytime soon… Wonder what they’d think of having to value an antique like that? Bet I wouldn’t make it on TV!

OMG! Grandmothers are not suppose to have vibrators, ever.
    Good post!
