When we were picking out the hardware and lighting fixtures and other things for our new home, we choose what we liked the look of, never really thinking about the functionality of them.

Pretty, but functional?

Pretty, but functional?

We’ve been in our new home for about three months now and we’re starting to see some of the really bad choices we made.  The first being our choice in carpet colors, with our door hardware being a close second.

I loved the look of these door handles, I never thought about how well the would work.  But apparently my dogs did.  For a household with dogs and small children, these handles were probably the worst choice ever!

It took only weeks for my boys (my dogs) to learn to open the doors with these handles.  At first it was just a fluke, or so we thought, they only ever got them open occasionally.  Now after I go through the house shutting them out of the areas they’re not allowed in, it takes them only seconds to reach up and open the doors.  So now there is no way to keep them out of restricted rooms.

Yesterday, I spent two hours out looking for the dogs because of this.  They got the back door open and escaped while I was in the shower.  I was irate!  My husband is now picking up at least two new door handles on his way home from work today, to at least make sure the exterior doors are dog proof.

If only we had thought of this in the first place, and not made such bad choices!  Well, they say hindsight is 20/20!

I made a mistake by getting that expensive hard wood flooring for one the rooms, and now the floor is all scratched up by the kids. Just ordered new flooring, and then adding carpet on that. Its really tough at the beginning (atleast thats how I feel), but now I think we make good decisions.

To try and avoid situations like this, I often search online for everything because not only is there more choice but often there are customer reviews accompanying the product I’m looking at.

Your cats can open doors? Wow, that’s surprising! I wish my dog would unlearn to do it! At least only one of them can, it would be worse if they all could do it.

Yes, dogs are very intelligent animals – more so than most people think! Thanks for visiting!

It is hard to decide how to deck out a new place! I knew hardwood floors wouldn’t work for us though, not with three dogs! No matter what we put in our houses, we’re always going to change our minds later, I guess!
