That’s all you need to work on a new house. At least it is for mine, or so I’m quickly finding out. I’ve spent quite a bit of time with these item lately. Not to mention a vacuum, a broom and a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser! I just have to say that I love those things! They clean just about anything, without any cleaners, so no stinky smelling stuff that does horrible things to your hands. They work great on everything from the sticker residue on all the new appliances and hardware, to the drywall that was all through the new bathtubs/showers, to even the muddy rings left in the bath tubs, due to our crappy water/well.
The horribly bothersome water that’s been causing us so many stupid problems. And that’s where the rest of the above mentioned tools come into play.
Yes, we’re finally living in our new house. Guess I can stop calling it the new house, as now we only have one! We started to move in on Friday, and finally got all of our stuff in on Monday. As of last night, we now have telephone and internet access, and if everything goes as planned today, we’ll have satellite tv in just a few hours.
Anyways, back to the problems at hand, I always knew I was handy around the house. Heck, I used to work for a construction company – not by choice, but by force – as it was the family business. But I didn’t think my skills would be needed in the new house quite so soon. Unfortunately, thanks to the gas company that drilled a well across the street from us last year, I’m still fighting with the water, and with the gas company. We are getting so much sand and small rocks up through our water well, that I have to keep a pair of visegrips, a butter knife and a bucket handy at all times. The visegrips to loosen the hoses and nozzles on anything that takes water and has a filter screen in it, as they all need to be cleaned out at least a few times a day. The kitchen and bathroom sinks, the shower heads, and especially the washing machine – which has to have it’s little screens cleaned out at least three time PER LOAD or the water just drips into the thing.
The company that drilled our new well in February, courtesy of the gas company, came back out yesterday to check it and see if they could find the problem. Well, they found it alright. The well is collapsing. As they tried to pull the pump up and out yesterday, they realized it’s covered in dirt. They pulled it about three feet and it got stuck. So now they want to try and pull it and put a liner the whole depth of the well. So it’s back to the gas company to decide what to do, because it’s their dime, or in this case probably thousands of dollars, as well liners aren’t cheap, but it may be cheaper than drilling us yet another new well.
I’m willing to live with it for a while though. just so I can be in my new house. It’s so nice to finally be out of the basement! And out of my parents house totally! I never thought moving home would be so… well, so different, I guess is the best way to describe it. We love the new place, although there’s still some boxes sitting around that I haven’t gotten unpacked yet, and no one can find anything. It’s still great to have room to move…
A 900 square foot house, to a 350 square foot basement to a 1400+ square foot house – it seems big. Although once we got the furniture in – it did shrink considerably. We’ve rearranged it about a hundred times trying to figure out what’s best. The sunroom, that was supposed to be my office, is now the living room – as it’s the only room my living room furniture would fit in comfortably. The living room, that was supposed to be the living room, with the fireplace is now our dining room, because the ordering prescription drugs online dining room seemed crowded with my table and chairs in it, and my office is now in the dining room. I like it though, it gives me a nice corner to hide all my junk in, and it’s in the center of the house, so I can hear everything that’s going on… Now if only I could see a TV. Oh wait – it wouldn’t matter if I could, because the satellite acomplia sale isn’t hooked up yet!
Our biggest problem over all is the mud though. I spent more time scrubbing dirty paw prints and footprints out of the carpet, and at least an hour of everyday is spent sweeping and mopping and vacuuming up all the dirt… But it’s worth it! I’m a homeowner again!

Leigh,
I’m glad you are in your house now. But, why are you calling it a house when it is your home. I feel there is a big difference. A house is just another building but a home is where you and your family kick off your shoes. Your place to live. You go to your parents, siblings and friends houses but I feel that it isn’t complete for your house until you call it your home. Just a thought I had.
I really hope they fix the water problem, I would hate to clean out the pipes all the time. I have never dealt with a well so I don’t know the problems that you can have with them. Wouldn’t it be cheaper to drill than to put a liner in a well? What does it take to put a liner in anyway?
Once again I’m glad that you are are HOME and probably enjoying all the space that you have. Hope to see it someday.
Jim
Good point Jim! It’s still just a house until all the boxes are unpacked, and we’re living comfortably!
Right now everything is still such a mess, no one has any time to relax and enjoy it. I’m still digging through boxes trying to find my underwear… lol… I feel like the girls in that movie The Sweetest Thing (Christina Applegate and Cameron Diaz) when they say it’s laundry day and they both have on swimsuits instead of bras, I’m wearing my swimsuit bottoms, and hoping that I’ll get the right box soon that has my underwear in it! So far I’ve only found 5 pairs, and I know I have a heck of a lot more than that!
We talked the to gas company today and they have at least acknowledged the problem, so hopefully they’ll fix it in a timely manner this time. From what I hear a liner is just slightly less expensive (per foot) than drilling a new well. But with drilling a new well, there’s always the chance that they won’t hit water, or that it’ll be not good water. (The church beside us has drilled 5 wells in the last year and have yet to hit one that isn’t red stinky water.) Right now, we have lots of water, and it’s good quality (no treatments needed, not even a softener) except for the sand that the pump is pushing up. So really our best bet is for a liner. We’re keeping our fingers crossed!
And the satellite guy even showed up on the day and time they said he would be here, that’s amazing! So far that’s the only utility that came when they said they would! Of course the “pre-wired” house doesn’t work with satellites, because it uses splitters, so he’s drilling holes in my walls as I type, making me quite nervous, as I’m the one who has to answer to my husband when he gets home *groan*. But maybe he’ll be so happy to have the DVR and Hi-Def TV hook up that he’ll forgive me (them).
Soon, it’ll be a home, with lots of room. Right now it looks more like a storage unit that a tornado hit.
