Photo by John Wardell (Netinho)As most of you know, I live in backwoods – small town – rural – whatever you want to call it, PA. There isn’t a lot to do around here except drink and have sex (or at least that’s what we used to say in high school, and things haven’t changed much since then, except that we’re all now paired up permanently and we have kids.)
So to liven up our lives, besides attending hubby’s family events, we instituted drinks night.
Hubby and his best friend work together, and by some small chance his fiancee and I actually get along, so Tuesday nights have become our night out, along with a few other friends who meet us at a local watering hole.
The first few weeks we were just insanely happy to be out in the land of the living and not stuck home with the kids, that it was fun no matter what happened. I even laughed the night hubby dumped my drink in my lap, and I had to stand under the hand dryers in the bathroom for half an hour so that I didn’t look like I’d peed myself.
But after the first few weeks, we realized that it was getting to be same old, same old. The same people were at the bar every time, doing the same things, and even we were having the same conversations every week. So we started switching bars every week, but even that became same old, as there aren’t a lot of places to choose from…
That’s when the betting began…
No we don’t bet on sporting events or anything like that, we bet on what the “regulars” are going to do next. The people in this area are so predictable, that it’s become like a game to us.
Such as the older gentleman whom practically lives at frequents our favorite bar, with him it’s usually betting on who he hits on next, or what time he’ll fall off his bar stool… as he almost always does both.
Or the newlywed couple that hangs outs there all the time and almost always gets in a fight, we bet on what time they’ll start their battle, or even what the fight will be over…
Or how many drinks the new bartender will mess up before he gets a complicated drink order right…
Or who will walk through a certain door next… Or whose phone will ring next…
Yeah, okay – lame, I know… But did I mention that there’s nothing to do in backwoods PA, unless buy medicine online you’re a golfer? Or like to drink or have sex?
Besides – we don’t bet money, we bet other – more exciting things…
Like babysitting time, well, us women bet babysitting time, or grocery shopping chores, or housecleaning.
The guys, they bet crazy things like having to take off their shirt and see how long it takes the bar tender to come over and ask them to put it back on, or having to ask a random stranger to go to the bathroom with them (of course there are very few random strangers around in a town of less than 4,000, so it’s more often just someone that doesn’t know them quite as well), or extra manual labor for home projects, occasionally the wager will be for the next round of drinks…
Kind of juvenile, but hey, it gives us something to laugh about…
And as I’m a bad guesser, it gives me lots of time with my friends kids…
Last night Hubby lost a bet, a big one, and he had wagered something he wasn’t ready to give up…
So stay tuned as tomorrow I’ll tell you all about what Hubby lost last night!

That is the down side – when you lose, but I’m okay with it, all my friends have little kids and I love spending time with them. My kids are 15 and 7 and I miss the baby stage…

Genius, I think some of those bets are quality! Sounds like a great place to go to high school!
Not really, unless you really want to be a teenage parent! Thanks for stopping by!
Thank you so much Leigh! Thanks for posting the Subscriber Wednesday. I was laughing at your post because the town I grew up in was the same exact way. Every body knew every body’s business and all you could do was drink or have sex.

Yep, you just described our town exactly, as my dad would say “you can’t take a sh*t around here without everyone knowing about it”, and there’s nothing to do, especially in the winter. At least in the summer there are lots of state parks and the touristy type crap around them.
